Eat as much salad and fresh fruit as you can. Try to stay away from sugar, meat and dairy products. Drink tons of water! And if you do get a cold, try Coldies as soon as possible. They're full of zinc and will help shorten the duration of your cold. Plus, they taste good! Health and happiness to all!

Hey you all! Hope most of you just have to prevent vs. cure the flu. Colorado is one of the States that had its struggle with this really nasty A-Fujian-flu-bug. Here are some of my suggestions that have kept me going strong not only thus far this season but past winters as well:

Please, please, please use common sense! Wash your hands frequently. You don’t need the harsh antibacterial soaps and gels. The goal is not to make your hands sterile but to create a “slippery slide” for the germs to be rinsed off easier. Also, there is something to be said about the “beauty sleep”. Getting sufficient amounts of sleep according to your individual needs will help your immune system to stay strong. Increase your intake of fresh fruits and vegetables especially over the winter months to supply your body with sufficient amounts of vitamins and anti-oxidants. If you get tired of nibbling on carrot sticks and celery all day long, try juicing. Also, squeezing grapefruits, oranges and lemons is a great and healthy way to supplement your liquid intake throughout the day.

Lastly, to supplement all of the above I take an extract called “Black Elderberry” (by Sambucol, for example). It is a kosher and all-natural product that was developed by virologists and supports your body in the fight against viruses. I take it for prevention, but increase the recommended dosage if I feel “under the weather”. And it REALLY works! You can get Black Elderberry in health food stores or via the net by visiting for example vitamin cottage.com. Hope that helps. Blessings and a healthy Christmas season to you all!

You may use my alias....A very good remedy for coughs is equal portions of lemon juice and honey. For example 1 cup of each. This is all natural and allows you to take it as often as you like.

For sore throats place a cold wet wool sock around the neck with a dry one ontop when going to bed.

Some of the best remedies to staying healthy and fighting colds and flus is prevention. Wash your hands especially after opening doors or using water fountians in areas where there are a lot of people using them. It helps stop the spread of germs. Do not touch your face or eyes until you have washed your hands. Drink plenty of water, and juice and get plenty of rest. This will help your immune system stay in top condition so to fight off infection and cold and flu causing germs. Thinking positive and being happy is also good for the immune system.

A merry heart doeth good like a medicine, but a broken spirit drieth the bones. Proverbs 17:22

[Editor's Note: Yes, I also believe the fact that I also started washing my hands carefully with soap and water, making certain never to touch my fingers to my mouth or eyes, has also really helped. In fact, I'm quite the weirdo when it comes to shaking hands with people during church. I just simply don't want to shake hands because I seem to catch every little thing, and if I do shake hands, my first stop is the rest room to wash my hands. I also feel the same way about sitting in front of someone who is coughing and sneezing during church. I try to carry things in both hands when I enter the church so I don't have to shake hands. I wish the greeters would just pat us on the shoulder or hand us the bulletin and wait until we extend our hands. Yes, Larry agrees I'm a wierdo in this regard too. ;) - Nannette]

I recently had the beginnings of a Flu with a sore throat and headache as the main symptoms. I went to see a Natural Remedies and Accupuncture Praticioner who recommended - Chinese Herbs 'Belamcanda 15' from Seven Forests and a homeopathic remedy called 'Gripp-Heel' by Heel Biotherapeutics. And it worked extremely well within like 2 days!!! I'm all well now. I'm a firm believer of natural remedies and Chinese Medicine! Western medicine just tends to 'mask' the symptoms rather than attact the source of the problem. Good Health to you all!

Female - Age Range: 31-40
I get flu shots ever year around this time.
I try to avoid catching the flu by trying to avoid using my hands too much in public places, in case someone's flu germs get onto my hands. I try to avoid touching my eyes, nose or mouth before washing my hands. As soon as I get to where I'm going I wash my hands.
As soon as I feel a cold coming on, I take a single clove of garlic, which has excellent antioxidants. I cut it up very fine and use a spoon to put it at the back of my mouth like a pill, without chewing it. Then I wash it down with lots of water. 'It tastes awful but it works'. I only need to do that once for the bug to go away.
If I feel the flu coming on when I'm far from home, I go to the nearest pharmacy to buy something to fight the flu before it takes hold.

Prevention is the first key to any illness season. Prevention in God's way, with natually good eating and nutrition. Taking vitamin supplements is often necessary in todays world of processed foods, and nutrient lacking chemically sprayed fruits and vegetables.

In addition to maintaining adequate vitamin/minerals such as vitamin A, E, Zinc, and Maganese, I utilize a number of herbs that I have found through experience to be very beneficial.

Echinachea Tea
Goldenseal Tea
Pau D Arco Tea
Elderberry Tea
Peppermint Tea
Ginger Tea
Feverfew Capsuls
Cayenne
also Astragalus, and Garlic

Echinachea boosts the immune system...really. It increases T-4 white cell production and helps to fight off many infections/viruses

Goldenseal is good for some bacterial infections, viruses, and some fungal infectious states such as with yeast, and systemic yeast.

Astragalus, a Chinese herb boots the immune system and interferon levels. I use it for some illnesses, but take it with care and caution.

Ginger is good for nausea, stomach cramps, intestinal malfuntion, and menstrual cramps, and fights the build-up of prostaglandins (pain producing hormone like substances in the body) and aids in some infectious states.

Elderberry is truly helpful for respiratory problems

Feverfew is great for migraines, some headaches, sinuses.

Cayenne kills off some bacteria and is good for sinuses.

Garlic (real garlic, not the pills) good for various infections, and has anti-fungal properties. (can aggravate some illnesses though)

Peppermint Tea, good for respiratory and stomach issues. Very soothing, relaxing and helps kill bacteria. Great to inhale the vapors from steeped Peppermint Tea.

If using Zinc, use with care, as it is a trace mineral, and can be harmful in large dosages. No more than 15 mg per dose. If low on zinc, a zinc tablet will produce a heavy metallic taste in the mouth.

Cold-eze helps clear stuffy sinuses even if it isnt a cold.
Finely mince a clove of garlic, mix with a little olive oil, spread on half a slice of bread, fold over to make half a sandwich. Eat by itself or with soup. If you are already sick, do this 2-3 times a day, if it doesnt bother your stomach.
Dont eat sugar in any form, honey, soda, etc. It stops your immune system for at least 4 hours.

Around 1995, my boss kept telling me I had a virus infection and it was a waste of time to go to the doctor's. After weeks of coughing, fever, and miserableness and my boss working me like a dog, I finally made an appointment anyway and saw the doctor. I had bronchial pneumonia. After that, around every November, and then again in February, I would get bronchial pneumonia and it would take me literally 4-6 weeks to get well again. (Never fear, I quit working for that guy soon after.)

About 4 years ago, a co-worker into herbal remedies suggested I use Solgar Beta 1,3 Glucans and sent me a bottle. I took the tablets several times a day and it helped boost my immune system to help me get better sooner - within a few days - long before 4-6 weeks. I'm sure I also had antibiotics from the doctor as well.

However, since then, whenever I start feeling achey, fluey, sniffley, or sickly, I start taking the tablets and it clears up by the next day. I have not had pneumonia, a cold, a cough, or the flu since taking these tablets. I don't take them every day, because I don't like taking pills. I only take them when I'm feeling I need a boost to my immune system.

My 17 year old daughter takes one of these every day, for 2 years, and hasn't been sick a day. She goes to school where the majority of kids are out sick, but not her.

I told a friend at church about these, and he started taking them, and it cleared up his symptoms immediately. He now also swears by them and when the flu season starts, he takes one everyday, as does his wife.

I'm allergic to cats, and when I leave the home of a person with cats, I start getting achey, sniffly, and miserable. But I take one of these tablets, and by morning I feel great. If I don't take one of these tablets, then I have the worst sore throat, cough, and cold by the next day. My daughter has exactly the same experience as well. So I also recommend them for folks with cat allergies.

http://store.yahoo.com/iherb/beta13.html

I order mine through iherb.com and since you don't see a little ID following that, you know that I am not doing this for a commission or kick-back. :)

I am tempted to try some of their immune boosters, but they are expensive, and the Solgar Beta 1,3 Glucans are only about $7.50 a bottle. There are other Beta Glucans on the web for upwards of $50 a bottle, but those are not necessary. This little bottle of 60 tablets works great!

I currently have a cold - the 'worst' one I've had in years, which doesn't say much because in the past several years I have experienced thinking that I was getting a cold, and then nothing really happened. This one is going on for about 10 days now, and I did miss one day of work because of it. To help me get through I drink orange juice, take extra vitamin C, eat lots of garlic, and drink Buckley's. The garlic (made into a paste and eaten by spoon) and the Buckley's burns my throat, but it sure helps.
As far as preventing colds, I think the best thing we can do is to live a healthy life (eating, exercise and stress-relief habits), strengthen our immune system when we're not sick, and then when something is 'going around' we're less likely to get it, and if we do, it won't hit us as hard.
So after saying that, why am I suffering the 'worst' cold in several years? I am guessing it will have to do with a decline in my healthy eating habits over the past year - I've recently turned that around and improving my eating habits, and so expect to see results soon :)
I wish all of you a cold/flu free year.

I seldom get a cold or flu, but when I do, I use these 'cures' (if I am feeling brave!).

1. In the blender, whiz up a couple of cloves of raw garlic with some V8 or tomato juice. Drink it all! Garlic is a natural germ killer. My dad tells me that when the terrible flu hit in about 1918, the only ones in Alberta not affected were the Ukranians -- they eat lots of garlic!
2. For the very brave (but does it ever work!): shake a SMALL amount of cayenne pepper onto the palm of your hand. Add a couple of drops of water. With your finger, touch in mixture and 'snuff' it up one nostril. Then repeat with the other nostril. You will want to hold each nostril closed for a couple of minutes until the slight burning goes away! It really isn't too bad!! Within just minutes, your nose and head will clear right out. One treatment is often enough. A pastor friend of ours and his wife were leaving for Ukraine for some evangelistic work, but they both had really bad colds. They tried this treatment just before they left, and felt so much better that they decided to pack their bottle of cayenne to take to Ukraine with them!

Stay healthy and have fun!

Lemon juice & a couple of tablespoons of honey in hot water, as well as gargling with a dash of cayenne pepper in warm water.....lots of sleep & use of a humidifier.

This response comes from a medical background, and my personal life. Get the rest your body requires, 7-8 hours. Drink lots of water -- recommended amount of water is 1/2 your weight in ounces of water per day, ex: 150#'s/75 ounces of water per day. Wear clothing appropriate for the weather. Eat less cooked food, and more fruits and salads and vegetables. It's best if the mentioned foods are eaten raw, there is more nutrition in them. Read what God's Word says about health. Also, stay away from 'unhealthy' people as much as possible.God bless you.

'You may use my alias'. My secret is an over the counter medicine called 'Congestac'. I have used it for 20 years. I have recommended and given it to many people who have congestion that they can not get rid of. They get relief with it and get rid of congestion (within a week) that they have been unable to get rid of for sometimes months. Good for asthma and allergy also. And of course, drink lots of water.

Female - Age Range: 61-70
When symtoms first appear I take 2000 mg's of vitamin C at bedtime and 1000 mg's of garlic. If you get to it soon enough this will stop it.

Female - Age Range: 61-70
When I feel a cold coming on I take a couple of echinacea/goldenseal tablets and suck on a zinc lozenge. I do this every couple hours. That chases the cold away.
I also know that if I eat anything with sugar I will catch an upper respiratory infection, so watch the amount of sugar you eat, it may happen to you also.

Female - Age Range: 61-70
2 cups of pineapple juice, 2 cloves of garlic, 6 baby carrots, 2 stocks of celery cut, a couple handfuls of fresh parsley, and if you want to add some zest 13 cup of medium salsa or you can use 2 fres cut-up tomatoes. Put it all into a large blender and blend until it is well puried and thick, and drink. Not only is it full of vitamins it is all raw and very healthy. It makes a quart and I have it every morning for breakfast. I can tell if I miss a few days that I soon do not feel as good. You can also use with the parsley fresh spinach or any other dark leafy vegetable.
One of my sisters in law told me that it didn't smell good but it sure tasted good and was really filling.
I drink this way before eating any thing else, and many times I don't need anything else to eat at all.

I sometimes just use the parsley, garlic, and pineapple juice and blend until frothy. there are several variations. Raw fresh veggies and fruit are very healthy and remember WASH EVERYTHING BEFORE USING.

In addition to plenty of water, rest, sunshine, and a good diet, I like to use zinc lozenges to help with colds/ flu (anytime I start to come down with a sore throat or feel other symptoms coming on). Supposedly the added zinc helps with the immune system and I think it also acts as a topical anti-microbial and/ or anti-viral (in the mouth and throat). The active form of the zinc is as zinc gluconate or zinc ascorbate, and it can be found in most pharmacies. I like the ones that have vitamin C added and have a lemon flavor as you're supposed to suck on the lozenge instead of swallowing it. It should be noted that they do have a metalic aftertaste, and it might be bad for some people depending on their physical condition and interactions with other medications. Consult your doctor to see if it is right for you.

Male - Age Range: 31-40
Well, I begin with the usual lots of water, rest, exercise and healthy food, avoiding sugar. Then I add Vitamin C, and A (vitamin A is as essential to fighting bugs as C is.).

I have a couple of special remedies that I use. Colloidal silver is one of the best natural antibiotics without side effects. And germs can't get resistant to it.

The other one is Wild Oregano Oil. Look in your health food store. It's also a natural antubiotic.

I'm currently in Korea, and couple of local things help. Kimchi is a soured cabbage preserve a little like sourkraut, but with lots of red pepper and garlic. Garlic and red pepper together are a potent weapon against almost any virus. So Kimchi is very helpful. Also, people have told me that Ginseng tea is good for fighting a cold virus. A couple other local teas are good too. Yuja tea (yuja is a small citrus grown in Jeju, Korea). Omija tea is also good. (Omija is a small red berry that also grows in Jeju, Korea.)

I currently have the sniffles, but I haven't really come under the weather like I usually do.

God Bless and stay healthy.

[Editor's Note: Be careful with red pepper. It can damage the lining of your stomach, and makes things worse if you have ulcers. - Nannette]

The best cure, naturally, is prevention. We all know that.

Here are a few of the things that I have found to be extremely effective for me. You won't like some of them. However, I can assure that each one of them is medically/scientifically sound.

At the first signs of a sore throat, do one or more of the following:

- Start going to bed before midnight consistently.

- Gargle using very warm water + salt or activated charcoal. You could also do both at different times.

-
a) Run your tap until it is as cold as possible.
b) Soak a face cloth in the cold water.
c) Wring it dry.
d) Roll up the wash cloth [similar to preparing a Pathfinder thingme (sash)].
e) Wrap it around your neck and secure it at the end.
f) Wrap plastic around the wash cloth to insulate it. A carefully torn or cut grocery bag does a nice job. White is best (since you are certain that no colour will rub off on your skin).
g) Wrap a scarf around the plastic and secure it in place.
h) Go to sleep. When you wake up, you will find that the rag is now hot.
i) Repeat steps a-g

-
a) Soak in a ver hot tub for 20 minutes or so. [Naturally, you bathe first for obvious reasons. Avoid a literal case of 'ring around the collar'.]
b) Take a cold shower for a couple minutes.

Even better would be to do the triple triple which boosts the immune system. Please feel free to comment/elaborate. Someone here must know the optimal proportion of the hot-cold water duration that will boost immune function.

This is something that can be done on a daily [The ladies all say, 'Oooooooooooooh'] or twice daily or 3 times in July basis.

Hot shower followed by a cold shower for a few seconds. Repeat 2 more times.

I always take hot showers so I have a head start. The way that I do the cold phase is to:
- make each phase colder than the previous one.
- get my head wet first. If my head is cold first, it doesn't feel as cold when my body gets the cold water.
- be certain that the cold water hits both axilas and any other points (when I think about it) that contain lymph nodes.
- rotate 360 degrees (usually in a different direction each time since I get dizzy very easily).

As my ENT said, upon my departure after my first visit to her office, 'Be well.'

Years ago I tried vitamin C and garlic when I felt a cold coming... It never did work that well.
.
For about 10 years I have been using Echinacea (sp?) and have found it to be just about foolproof if I used it right. The effective way to use it is to take a significant amount when I first sense the slightest hint of an oncoming cold... a tickle... Something that makes me wonder if I even am getting something...
.
The only problem is I'm never totally sure that I was getting something and got cured :-) But overall I have no doubts as to it's effectiveness for me.
.
On the other hand I haven't had occasion to use it for a long time. For a couple years I've been planting 3 40 foot rows of garlic a year and eating it all winter... And this is a garlic that is about as big as elephant garlic, but stronger than the regular. We eat it dried and ground up... add it to our food... sandwiches...
.
I don't know if the garlic keeps the people with the germs away or keeps the germs away! I have friends that get fairly close and speak their minds quite readily. None of them have told me that I have garlic breath! But that doesn't mean I don't :-)
.
But if you've read about garlic, you know that it has incredible health benefits far beyond preventing colds and flus! According to Neil Nedley it is the vegetable with the highest antioxidant rating... That's just one of it's positive features...
.
I treasure the good health God gave me! I love not having to think about it. I treasure the freedom it gives me to let God use me to bless others through a knowledge of Him...
.
blessings to y'all

in a cup, add 1T lemon juice, 1T lime juice, 1T honey, 1 oz. whiskey, fill with hot water, drink and cover up. it is amazing how well this works on a common cold. not more than 2 of these or you won't care if you have a cold or not...

[Editor's Note: Please be assured that Larry and I would never recommend whiskey or any alcoholic beverage. - Nannette]
