A member asks:

I would like to hear from others who have tried different diets for health reasons and their success rate. Would you offer a "sound off" topic on Health Diets so we could all get a realistic idea of successes and failures?

Survey: Have you or a friend used a health diet to cure a health problem or disease? What was your success rate or failure? Did you stick to the diet, and for how long? What was the nature of your illness? Describe the diet or provide a link to it, if possible.

My father has type a diabetes and it is controlled by eating right. He does not always take care of himself, but I know that when he does it makes him able to do everything he wants the energy to do.

The not taking care of himself part is when he eats sugar several times a week. When he is taking care of himself he walks several times a week.

As his diabetes gets worse he is taking better care of himself more often. He learned in the past that being careless or lazy about his diabetes was ruining his life, he is only 58. I'm proud of him, he will be here to meet the man God has for me one day. =}

As a seventh-day adventist, I grew up eating clean meats, as allowed in Leviticus 11. In 1988 I stopped eating any kind of meat, because I read about the benefits of a meatless diet in the book Ministry of Healing, by Ellen White. I didn't have any health concerns at the time.

Since I was working as a registered nurse, I had the impression that I might have been missing protein by not eating meat, so I tried to compensate with extra eggs and dairy products.

In 1993 I found out I had a tendency to high blood pressure. My blood pressure reading was consistently 130/90 mmHg, and sometimes a little over. The normal value is 120/80 mmHg, or less. At the time I was a lacto-ovo vegetarian, in other words, not eating meat, but using eggs and milk products, including chocolate and other refined products containing white flour, white sugar and refined fats (butter, margarine, oil).

After reading more carefully about a wholesome diet, I realized that I was still eating the wrong things, even though I didn't eat meat. The refined products I was eating were making me sick, and I didn't like the idea of continuing the wrong diet if that was going to cause me to take medication to counterbalance the bad effect of my diet, no matter how much I liked the refined foods.

By God's providence, in the fall of 1993 I was able to go to Hartland College, a seventh-day adventist private institute with a college and a lifestyle center, with the intention to learn about proper nutrition, as well as how to cook wholesome food, for prevention and treatment of disease.

After two months of living by the principles promoted at this place, I checked my blood pressure and it was back to normal. 120/80 mmHg, later 110/70 mmHg. Praise the Lord!

For three years of living in Virginia on Hartland Institute's campus, I have been a total vegetarian, eating foods as close to the original package God gives us as possible, and have not missed any of the rich desserts I have been used to before. I did have desserts, but healthful ones, and tasty, too.

For breakfast, the best meal of the day, I would have some fruit, nuts and seeds, hot or cold cereal (whole grain); ocassionally, fruit crisp, scrambled tofu, potatoes, etc.

For lunch--salads and vegetarian dishes with complete protein obtained from combinations of beans and grains; ocassionally healthy desserts.

For supper--lightest meal of the day--fruit or vegetable salad, with crackers or popcorn, etc.

Now, in my own home, I prepare completely vegetarian dishes, as well, and my guests, my husband and I enjoy them. Occasionally, when I travel, I do have food that contains dairy, eggs, or vegetarian refined products, but try to limit it as much as possible, since that would not provide the complete package as God intended, with the proper vitamins, minerals and fiber. God's diet is a diet for life, not only a fad, temporary, diet. God's diet is nutritious, tasty, disease fighting, and health promoting.

Besides a wholesome vegatarian diet, other factors like exercise, water, exercise, sunshine, rest, temperance, fresh air, and trust in God, have a healing effect for all the systems of our bodies. Those eight basic principles have been implanted in us at creation, and the better we follow them, the healthier and happier we can be. They are as much a part of the natural law as is the law of gravity.

After having worked for Hartland Wellness center for more than two years, and other institutes for shorter periods of time, I have witnessed significant improvement in guests' health within only 10-18 days of healthful living. Guests' health problems included heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis, and even different forms of cancer. Some have completely normalized and others have slowly been improved.

Hartland Institute, in Virginia, promotes the eight laws of health as sumarized in the acronim NEWSTART, like Weimar Institute in California, Uchee Pines Institute in Alabama, Wildwood Institute in Georgia, and others across the world.

Feel free to contact me for more clarification, if needed.

VITAMIN B-12 DEFICIENCY:

There is a genetic link in our family relating to the above, that affects the central nervous system, in both males and females.
After some time and with lots of persistence, my brother and I both find we have been able to keep well, and without need for tablets/injections/hospitalisation, if we have ample intake of the below in our diet.

I now eat at least DOUBLE SERVINGS of GREEN LEAFY vegetables, i.e. broccoli, lettuce, spinach, chinese greens, cabbage, etc.

I also include heaps of FRESH GREEN HERBS in salads and cooking - such as rocket, oregano, nasturium, parsley, coriander, fennel, rosemary, sage, mint, mustard, watercress, chives and also ginger. The ginger, sage and peppermint also make nice teas, taken black. (These herbs are readily available from the supermarket, or grow easily in a home garden or in pots on a balcony.)

Mushrooms.
Eggs.
Some dairy or soya milk.
A little cheese - the less mature the better, i.e. feta, ricotta, cream cheese, cottage cheese.
(Vegemite or Marmite spread on toast, or in a mug with boiling water as a hot broth drink - A Doctor recommended the Marmite to my brother if he needed a quick pick-up, as it contains a lot of B vitamins. I personally like the Vegemite. But they are similar.)

Daily Vitamin C is absolutely essential for optimal absorption of the Vitamin B-12. I personally find the best sources of Vit C are obtained from the below:
Lemons/Limes.
Pineapple.
Onions.
Grapefruit.
Kiwifruit.
Capsicums.

White breads and sugars are not well tolerated, and when eaten, I notice an increased need for all of the above foods to detox.

Sorry, but coffee is a no no!

Adequate sleep, rest and relaxation is vital. We found we both needed to re-pace our lifestyles, and stop before exhaustion.

Hope this info will be of help to some.

There is a lot to be said for using the regulation of one's diet in order to cure diseases...or to reduce the pain or symptoms of different diseases. Many years ago, I read Hulda Regher Clark's books, The cure for All Diseases, The Cure for Cancer, and the Cure for HIV/Aids. They made a profound impact on my life...and those of others I know. I know of at least one man who followed the regimen in the Cure for Cancer...and became totally cancer free...and still is.
I started doing things like detoxifying my body...and became healthier as a result. The more detoxified my body became, the more I realized the effects that chemicals and additives, etc. had on it.

About the same time, I read a report by the AMA stating the side effects of soda pop, and the CO2, and other chemicals it contains, such as phosphates (phosporus). Years ago, long before my time, soda pop was referred to as 'phosphates.' It told how the phosphates in it leeched calcium from the bones, causing bone deterioration, brittle bone disease, osteoporosis, etc. It also told how the CO2 water caused 'arthritis like symptoms' which is very similar to the problems I was having with carpal tunnel syndrome at the time, for which Dr's. prescribe arthritis medications. Since I had excruciating pains going from my finger tips up into my chest areas...I decided to go off soda pop completely for one month and see if the symptoms were alleviated. Why one month? Because it takes the body while to cleanse itself of the chemicals you've partaken of for years....Before the month was up, I was totally pain free. That was almost 18 years ago, and I can still do repetetive work for 12 hours or more without pain today. However, if I have so much as half a can of soda pop, in less than half an hour the excruciating pains will return in full force all the way up and into my chest...just like before. My choice? Stay off soda pop.

Also there is scientific proof that cancer and other diseases can NOT live in a body that is NOT highly acidic in nature. The more preservatives we consume, as well as refined flours and sugars, or processed foods, the more acidic our bodies become, and thus the more open to disease.

While I am not perfect in this area yet...during a time of 6 months or less last year, my pH levels raised from off the scale...below 5.5 to maintaining a consistent level of 7.2 or above. I am now in the best health I've been in during the past 20+ years of my life...and I owe it to the dietary changes I've made, some alternative health methods, and especially prayer. I am living proof...because on 1/22/01 the Dr. gave me less than 6 months to live....and I am not only alive today...but in the best health of my life as a result!

Sorry, about that the phone rang and I had to leave and then reconnect.

I'd say that diet and exercise are a cure if you are presistant and also, ask the Lord's help in these matters.

Depression is something that is highly misunderstood by humanity and human science. Through becoming vegan (no dairy or meat) as well as abstaining from vinegar, sugar and stimulants such as caffeine, I have been able to have more of my life back. I have been vegan for quite a few years now and ive started to exercise and have come to enjoy added physical energy as well as a sharper mind. The battle is not won against the depression, but it has less power than it did before I chose to alter my diet and lifestyle.

This isn't really a diet, in and of itself, but I think it may be of great benefit to some members to hear this testimonial about Flax.

My mother used to experience rather constant mild arthritis and bouts of much more severe joint pains, but for several years now she has been completely pain free. All she does is take 1 Tablespoon full of flax seed oil every day. It tastes pretty strong so she gulps it down and follows it with OJ or soymilk. But she says some people like it mixed with oatmeal. You can get it in capsuls but it's much cheaper per TBSP to get it bottled. She gets the cold expeller pressed high-lignan variety and keeps it in the fridge. It's very high in Omega-3 fatty acids, essential nutrients missing from most diets. Just thought maybe some people out there suffering arthritis might want to give it a try. Tell me if it works for you like it did for my Mom... I'm curious. JoshK

I've been doing my version of the Hallelujah Diet (www.hacres.com) for over three years now. I started doing it to build up my immune system to stop getting the flu, and to try and get rid of the lethargy that I had thought was normal. It has been very successful for me. Very soon after starting, my immune system got rid of remnants of the flu. After 1 month or two, I could breath freely through my nose when lying down - which I had not been able to do for years - because all the mucus had gone! Don't under-rate how good this still feels!!!

After a while, the energy gain is amazing; I never feel lethargic; tired yes as is normal, but not lethargic anymore.

After about a year I noticed that my short-sighted left eye (which was not bad enough for specs, but nevertheless had been very annoying being slow to focus and was worsening) had been restored to 99%. Now after three years my left eye is 100%.

Be prepared: To educate yourself thoroughly. It is truly worth it. It takes time and effort to change to this diet. A lot of people fail to make the adjustment. It takes a lot of self-encouragement to make radical changes that are truly successful. You need to read the appropriate books to keep up self-motorvation, keep a diary of its health successes so you can look back and prove it to yourself. It takes some imagination to find ways to make natural food taste good. But take a look around at different health shops for ideas, and natural recipe books (not cook books). Think healthy first, then figure out how to make it taste good - I'm telling you it can be done! I'll let you in on a secret, be prepared for a nice surprise, natural food tastes better 2 to 3 months after you've moved to a more natural diet because your tastebuds get more sensitive to natural flavours.

The key: The biggest key I've found is in the juicing that they rave about. Take AT LEAST carrot juice OR a brand of Barley grass juice (see the web-site, but other Barley brands work too), preferably both, and don't be a scrouge when you do. When you don't not take one of these, or you don't have enough your immune system WILL NOT be as strong and you will not get the same energy levels.

Many people use this diet to get over horrendous physical problems, and are successful. But you don't have to be that bad. I was 26 (now 29) and did not really have much wrong with me (even though I was actually worse than I knew) and I was not overweight. I lost weight, and you will too in time. To be honest, I think I am holding youthful looks better than those my own age who are now overweight, have skin problems, are lethargic and run down by life. This diet truly makes you feel younger. Given time, you will become naturally good at 'listening' to your body ask for healthy food instead of chocolate and other rubbish food.

No joke, God-willing no accidents, I seriously do expect to live past 100 years of age in the best of health without arthritis, osteperosis, cancer, high blood pressure, etc. Read the books of people in the alternate health field and do research on the old ones. You usually find they died in great health doing some rediculous activity for their age group (eg Paul Bragg surfing when 99yo; or someone I just read about who was horse-riding at 100, get the picture?)

Also note, the old Health tips on the hacres.com web site are good guide to many facets of the diet.

This is the diet to end all others! And they didn't pay me to say that. It is just my experience...my body tells me how good it feels.

Well, I'm glad I can get to say something about diet & health here. As my alias implies, I'm a nutritionist. I've seen it all, from fads and science fiction, to what really works.

So what really works? Good foods do! Nutrient-dense foods that supply the body with active biomolecules necessary for normal to optimal biological functions.

What doesn't work? Anything that is not well metabolized by the body as a food or nutrient; namely, empty calories, highly processed foods, artificially made foods, and food supplements that claim to contain 100% RDA.

Yes, supplements do contain what they say...but you'll never assimilate and utilize most, if any, such nutrient molecules because most all supplements are synthesized as lab-made 'enantomer' (mirror) molecules, and are often useless and even toxic. (Every doctor knows this.)

For instance, do you think there are enough oranges in the world to extract enough vitamin C for everyone? Over 80 million pounds of vitamin C is synthesized each year! Even slightly higher than normal levels of vitamin supplementation has been proven to be toxic, especially the fat soluble vitamins because they are easily retained in your body's adipose tissues (ie: vitamins A,D,E,K).

If every vitamin supplement were made from real foods, then there would be a lot of wasted food fiber, wouldn't there? The world can not afford to waste food, so laboratories synthesize nutrient molecules because it's cheap...and cheap is what you get.

Additionally, the studies that have been concluded about vitamin C (for instance) and its ability to reduce the risk of cancer, were achieved with orange rhindes, rose hips, and wheat grass...extracted naturally, and given to mice. Supplement companies don't tell you that part, simply because their vitamins are synthetic!

Also, university research labs just have no time or money to test every supplement on the market, nor do they. Supplement companies are independently operated businesses, and have only one FDA requirement, and that is for honest labeling.

And honestly, the formula for synthesized vitamin C (ascorbic acid: C3H4O3) is exactly the same as naturally occurring vitamin C. However, many synthesized nutrient molecules have a mirrored (enantomer) orientation which makes them less or not at all usefull to cells. Thus, synthesized vitamins are excreted by the body in the urine. While many formulas are the same, the molecules are not!

Savvy supplement companies often get a hold of such studies (like the Vitamin C and Cancer Study conducted at the Linus Pauling Institute) and will promote 100% RDA or more of vitamin 'X' in a bottle, and it is honestly labeled because their formula is the 'same', yet completely synthesized with differently shaped molecules.

Other nutrient molecules can be prefixed by 'alpha, beta, omega, cis, trans', etc. These molecule orientations tell a biochemist which form or shape a molecule has taken...but this does not change the formula, just the shape or orientation of a molecule. Some molecule shapes are recognized by cells, while others are not.

Supplement companies that sell vitamins are also allowed by the FDA to make a 'general health statement' about a vitamin and a disease, even though their particular product may have NEVER been tested on that disease. Such a health statement is a direct reference to the study on the vitamin from foods, but so marketed, you would think it was also a statement about the product as well...but it's not.

Furthermore, as long as each dosage contains at least 90% of 'natural ingredients' (fillers & sugars mostly), then it can also be advertised as an 'all natural' supplement. There is a big difference between marketing & education!

Do you want vitamin C? Eat plenty of oranges, tomatoes, mangos, papaya, cantaloupes, pineapples, broccoli, cauliflower, asparagus, etc., and you'll get a lot more than what you bargained for!

Also, try this experiment: see how long you can live on just supplements! (Of course, add some refined sugar, processed oil, and cheap protein powder for energy because vitamins & minerals have no caloric energy to begin with.)

In the last 5 years, scientists have proven that of the top 6 causes of death in this country, 4 of them are diet related. The 1st is heart disease, 2nd cancers, 3rd strokes, and the 6th killer is diabetes mellitus. (The other two are 4th obstructive lung disease, and 5th motorcycle accidents.)

Thus, here are the best known criteria to any good diet...and for disease prevention.

1) A proper diet must be balanced with plenty of natural macronutrients (proteins / carbs / essential fats) so it can be sustained for the long term.

2) A diet should include a variety of foods in order to supply much needed micronutrients (vitamins / minerals) and phytochemicals.

3) Foods in any good diet should not be damaged by radiation, excessive heat, chemicals or residuals, or any other forms of energy that can cause the oxidation of nutrient molecules and the formation of free radicals. (Uhhh, yeah, microwaving is out, and so are most cooking techniques.)

4) A diet should be composed of the freshest & least processed foods available. According to the latest cancer research, *at least 7 servings of grains, legumes, and starchy vegetables should be consumed daily...plus, 5 servings of fresh fruits & vegetables...and this is a minimum!

*(The American Institute for Cancer Research has made this recommendation under one of its guidelines for choosing a diet rich in a variety of plant-based foods.)

5) Lastly, stop worrying about what other people think about you trying to eat healthy...unless you want to look like them!
For those of you who grew up singing 'Dare to be a Daniel'...dare you?

Thanks for reading my 'essay'. I just recently put up a free-information website for anyone wanting more info about how to eat right.

Hope this helps!
