My Dad died recently. He had been fighting cancer and an ameloyd for a couple of years. After getting cancer, he and his wife, Robbi, started attending church and became Christians.
Dad was a wonderful Christian and we know he sleeps in the grave with a promise to be resurrected at the Second Coming when Christ will bring His followers home. We hold onto the promise in 1 Thessalonians 4:
13 But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus.
15 For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep. 16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. 18 Therefore comfort one another with these words.
What a comfort and promise!
At his funeral, I said these words about my Dad:
First, I want to thank Robbi for being such a wonderful wife to Dad. And I want to thank the members of their church for opening up their hearts to Robbi and Dad.
When I was about 9, I was cuddling on Daddy's lap in his favorite chair, and he said, "You poor little girl." I asked "Why am I a poor little girl?" And he replied, "Because you're not a rich little girl."
It's true, we were poor and Dad couldn't give us a lot of nice things, but he gave us what was more important -- a lot of love.
I have a lifetime of wonderful memories of me and Dad -- fishing, hunting coons, hunting quail, killing snakes, caring for dogs and pigeons, working in the orchard and garden, teaching me how to drive the tractor and the car. Always encouraging, always gentle, soft-spoken, tenderhearted, loving.
Dad was always up by 5AM taking care of his coonhounds and getting ready for work. My sister's always knew I made very good grades in school, but they may not have known that every night I would leave my math homework on the table, with a note asking Dad to check it for me. He would check it and if I missed one, he'd work out the problem to show me how to do it -- he did this clear through 9th grade Algebra.
Dad loved to sing. You'd never know by hearing him sing in church, but he would sing silly country songs to us girls all the time -- clear through to our teenage years. I remember three of them:
*Take a Tater and Wait, Out Behind the Barn, and my favorite, Chocolate Icecream Cone.
I loved to sit on Daddy's lap while he sang those songs to me.
When we were younger, Dad worked at a rodeo slaughterhouse, then later at an elevator factory. At both places, he played a major role in working to get fair wages for the employees.
I grew up and went into computers and one day he called me on the phone and was concerned because they were going to computerize his workstation at the elevator factory. I assured him that he was smarter than that computer and could do it. It reminded me of all the times he encouraged me and told me how smart I was and could do anything I wanted.
He ultimately went on to a career working on a computer all day, but never learned to love computers. His love was God, Robbi, his 5 daughters, his land, and his animals -- the important things.
Since Daddy's grandparent's lived to be over 100 and grandma almost reached 100, I thought Dad would live forever. He may have lost the physical battle on this earth, but he won the spiritual battle and I thank God that Daddy returned to God and know that he will have a special crown in heaven and we will meet there, never to part again.

[I didn't quote the words to these songs in the eulogy, but here are some of the words as I remember him singing them, plus the link to the actual words...]
Take an Old Cold 'Tater (And Wait) (Bartlett)
http://sniff.numachi.com/~rickheit/dtrad/pages/tiOLDTATER.html
When I was a little boy around the table at home I remember very well when company would come I would have to be right still until the whole crowd ate My Ma would always say to me "Son, take a tater and wait." [The above line is not as it was originally written, but is the way Dad sang it.]
CHORUS: Now 'taters never did taste good with chicken on the plate But I had to eat 'em just the same That is why I look so bad and have these puny ways Because I always had to an old cold 'tater and wait.
And then the preachers they would come to stay awhile with us I would have to slip around and raise a little fuss In fear that I would spill the beans or break the china plate My Ma would always say to me "Son, take a tater and wait."
CHORUS
Well I thought that I'd starve to death before my time would come All that chicken they would eat and just leave me the bun The feet and neck were all that's left upon the china plate It makes you pretty darn weak to take an old cold 'tater and wait.
CHORUS Recorded by Little Jimmy Dickens
Out Behind the Barn http://sniff.numachi.com/~rickheit/dtrad/pages/tiOUTBEHND.html
My pappy used to tan my hide, out behind the barn He taught me to be dignified, out behind the barn But when he took his strap to me, And turned me down across his knee He sure did hurt my dignity, out behind the barn
I got my education out behind the barn And I'm not foolin' no siree Passed each examination, out behind the barn But it almost made a wreck out of me
[I didn't include all the verses here...]
